About Penlaos Khaoyai

Introducing Penlaos Khaoyai Restaurant, a relaxed Lao-Thai restaurant set in the green hills of Khao Yai, where flavors feel bold yet comforting and the mood stays easygoing. Located at 56 หมู่ที่ 17 Thanaratch Rd, Mu Si, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima 30450, Thailand, Penlaos Khaoyai is the kind of place you stumble into for lunch and end up lingering longer than planned because everything feels unforced and welcoming. I like to describe it as casual dining done right, with open air touches that make outdoor seating especially appealing on cooler days, while the indoor space keeps things simple and social. The menu leans into shareable Lao-inspired plates, so small plates and quick bites naturally turn into a full spread once the table starts filling up, and that flexibility makes it easy to visit whether you are hungry or just curious. Vegetarian and vegan options are thoughtfully woven in, which means plant-based diners are not stuck choosing sides, and everyone can order with confidence. Drinks play their own supporting role here, since you can pair spicy dishes with a cold beer, sip wine at a relaxed pace, or grab a coffee if you are stopping by earlier in the day. Service options are also practical without feeling corporate, because dine-in is smooth, takeaway is efficient, and delivery, including no-contact delivery, fits modern travel plans around Khao Yai. What stands out most about Penlaos Khaoyai is how naturally it fits into the area, feeling local rather than touristy, yet polished enough to recommend to friends who care about good food. From casual group meals to laid-back solo stops, the restaurant keeps things flexible, flavorful, and friendly, making it easy to come back again and again. It works just as well after a long park drive as it does for a planned meet-up, because the atmosphere encourages conversation, shared plates, and relaxed pacing without any pressure to rush.

The decoration is unique and creates a nice atmosphere. The food tastes great, and the staff are very friendly, helpful, and easy to communicate with in English. On top of that, they have received a Michelin award, which makes the experience even more special. Highly recommended!

Penlaos is a great place to enjoy authentic Thai-Isan food in Khao Yai, and it’s easy to see why so many locals stop by for a meal. The restaurant opens around 9:30 a.m. and stays open late, with plenty of parking and a very family-friendly setup—high chairs available and lots of families dining together. There’s no air-conditioning, but the tall, open building and large fans keep the air circulating well, making it a relaxing spot to enjoy the Khao Yai weather. Portions are intentionally not large, which actually makes the experience better—you can order several dishes and enjoy a variety of flavors, almost like a tapas-style meal. Food comes out quickly and is clean, fresh, and flavorful. The bamboo shoot dish was excellent, and the som tam was well balanced and not overly spicy (you can adjust the spice level easily). Kids loved it, and the complimentary kanom tuay served at the table is a must-try. A very enjoyable place to spend time with family in Khao Yai.

The restaurant is located not far from the entrance of Khao Yai National Park and is always packed with people. Overall, the food was excellent — especially the mushroom soup, which had a uniquely rich flavor. I’ve tried similar Thai dishes elsewhere, but this place definitely stands out. Plus, the ingredients were impressively fresh.

PenLaos Khaoyai is a must-visit Isaan restaurant in Khao Yai, offering authentic Northeastern Thai flavors in a rustic, nature-inspired setting. I recently dined here and tried the Som Tam Lab Gai Yang (spicy papaya salad with grilled chicken larb) and Tom Gai Hua Plee (chicken soup with banana blossom)—both were outstanding, with bold, fresh tastes that hit all the right spicy, tangy notes. The menu boasts diverse Isaan dishes plus unique Korat specialties, all made with high-quality, fresh ingredients at great value—our meal for two was filling and affordable at around 400-500 THB. Michelin Guide-recognized for two years, it delivers restaurant-level quality without the premium price. Spacious indoor-outdoor seating makes it perfect for families or groups near the Khao Yai National Park entrance. The ambiance feels homey with natural decor. I highly recommend it for flavor-packed Isaan eats—I'll return!
